Urban Mayors Policy Center Supporting NJ Clean Communities Initiatives

The Township of Hillside was a key target of anti-litter initiatives this summer in New Jersey’s urban communities

New Jersey Clean Communities has partnered with the John S. Watson Institute for Urban Policy & Research Urban Mayors Policy Center (UMPC), led by Tenisha Malcolm, to advance community cleanup efforts and provide support to urban centers awarded NJCC grants to address clean, healthy, and safe communities.

Cities identified for these efforts are also members of the New Jersey Urban Mayors Association (NJUMA).

The NJUMA is dedicated to working with state and federal lawmakers and officials to develop appropriate and effective public policy measures that benefit the state’s urban centers and to help lawmakers understand how public policy affects New Jersey’s cities and municipalities.

This summer, the UMPC kicked off its clean communities initiative in the Township of Hillside addressing litter on four business corridors. The kickoff engaged residents, youth and businesses and established greater awareness of NJCCC in community. While the launch began in Hillside, the plan for the next year will be to create and support the implementation of Clean Communities programs across Union County and statewide in other NJUMA cities. Next to be launched, in the Winter/Spring, will be a series of projects in Plainfield in partnership with the city and school district.

Through this partnership the goal is to bolster NJCC efforts in urban centers by providing capacity building support, policy advancements and strengthen program evaluation indicators to measure impacts.
