Best Practices Updates for 2023-24 Promote Student Education

Whether you are new to the Clean Communities Program or a seasoned veteran, the Best Practices Guide is a vast educational resource.

The Best Practices Committee is thrilled to announce that annual updates are complete and this year’s edition boasts a brand-new “Field Trips” section, providing more than a dozen field trip options in New Jersey that incorporate a litter awareness component.

“Local governments can use their Clean Communities grant funds to help defray costs for the field trips,” explained NJCCC Board Member and Atlantic County Coordinator Rebecca Turygan. “Grant money can be used for transportation costs as well.”

Some suggested trips: Adventure Aquarium in Camden, the Cape May Bird Observatory, Clean Ocean Action in Long Branch, Great Swamp Outdoor Education Center in Chatham, Jenkinson’s Aquarium in Point Pleasant Beach, SeaQuest Woodbridge in Woodbridge and the Trailside Nature and Science Center in Mountainside.

Located under the Education Section of the Best Practices tab on the NJ Clean Communities website, NJClean.org.

The Field Trips page is a great supplement to two other extremely popular Best Practices items: the Clean Communities Assembly Program and the Book List. These are both great resources for educators and coordinators looking to give their students new and fun experiences that teach them about litter abatement.

The Best Practices Committee posted other relevant updates throughout the guide including the popular Vendor List and Activity Guide.

All Clean Communities Coordinators are encouraged to take advantage of the extensive items available on this website. There are tools and tips for all three pillars of Clean Communities: Enforcement, Education, and Cleanups.

Thank you to Liz Sweedy, retired Morris County Coordinator, for putting the Field Trips list together, as well as Carole Tolmachewich, Middlesex County; Rachel Barton, Burlington County; Samantha DeFrancisco, Cumberland County; and Elyse Barone from Sayreville for all their time and effort.
